Practical Information in Rudesheim
Edit ThisRudesheim Practical Information is always helpful, not only because it will save you time, but also because it will save you money when visiting this city in Germany. Here are some practical tips when visiting Rudesheim.
Worshipping Rudesheim' Wine Queen
The Wine Queen of Rudesheim has a large following, and her majesty is celebrated every year at the Rudesheim Wine Festival. During this celebration, several young ladies are selected as princesses of the wine festival, and out of them, only one is chosen as the Wine Queen. There are several wine-producing communities around and nearby Rudesheim, the one from the Counts of Katzenelnbogen being the most famous. When tasting the wines during the festival, make sure to try the local favorite, the Rudesheimer Riesling, a sweet, lightly carbonated wine, excellent for hot summer afternoons.
Saving Money with Hostelling International
When visiting Rudesheim (or any city in Europe), it is a great idea to apply for membership of the Hostelling International network before your leave your country of origin. Having a membership card for this organization will grant you access to special discounts from several shops, restaurants, bars, special attractions, museums and, more importantly, hostels around Germany. Rudesheim is served by 2 hostels: the Rhein Nahe Jugenderberge in Bingen and the Rudesheim Jugendherberge 1, right in the heart of Rudesheim. The room prices vary between 18 and 114 euros, depending on your room preference and the number of people in your party. Don't let the name "youth hostel" fool you; these 2 hostels welcome people of all ages and groups of any size. When booking your reservation, make sure to mention your Hostelling International membership card to get the lowest price.
German Dialects
When visiting Rudesheim, even if you speak perfect High German, don't be surprised if you cannot speak with some locals, especially if they are over 60 years old. High German was not the national language until around the middle 20th century, and several schools, especially in small rural towns did not teach this language at all. Rather than becoming frustrated that people don't understand you, try to have a good sense of humor about it and find a local interpreter.
Attractions Around Rudesheim
When visiting Rudesheim, you will have several options for entertainment, such as hiking and historical sightseeing. The two main hiking trails of Rudesheim are the Rheinsteig (starting at Wiesbaden, passing through Lahnstein and Bonn and ending at Rudesheim) and the Riesling Route (starting at Rudesheim, passing through several vineyards and ending at Weisbaden). Among the most popular historical landmarks to visit are the Bromserburg (the oldest castle in the Rhine Gorge World Heritage Site) and the Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett (the first German museum of musical instruments, which is famous for its interactive display of self playing musical instruments).
