Learn about Slovenly Peter
A fun museum for children is the Struwwelpter Museum which is full of children’s books memorabilia from the book Struwwelpeter. This is the story of Slovenly Peter who behaves very badly. The first English translation was done in 1848 by Mark Twain. Other museums worth a visit are the Historical Museum, Children’s Museum and the Apfelwein or apple wine museum. The historical museum has a scale model of the old town of Frankfurt.
Enjoy a River Cruise
Cruise down the main river and enjoy views of the skyline while checking out the historical buildings along the banks. All of the boats have open air areas and you can purchase snacks. There are family tickets available. The best spot to pick up a boat is near the Historical Museum.
See the View from the Top
Climb the stairs to the top of Eschenheimer Turm. This watchtower was built in the 14th century and was originally part of the medieval fortifications. At the bottom is a café. The Goethe house should not be missed, specifically if you have teenagers. The Goethe home is beautiful and contains a collection of paintings that depicts his life in Italy and Germany.
The Natural History Museum
If you love fossils then you should not miss the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History. You will find exhibits about evolution and a great paleontology exhibition from Grube Messel with fossils that are more than 50 million years old. This site was very important for the early development of mammals and is a World Heritage Site.
A Day at the Botanical Gardens
If it is particularly lovely out then spend some time in Palmengarten. This contains more than 50 acres of botanical gardens and you can also rent rowboats to go out on the pond. Some of the unusual gardens include an oriental rock garden, rose garden and historic greenhouses. There is also a sub-antarctic house and tropicarium which contains tropical plants.

A great day trip is the town of Offenbach. This is the place to shop for leather goods. There is also a Leder und Schihmuseum, leather and shoe museum. This is the largest museum of leather goods found in the world and you can find items from China and Europe. For those that love hats, take the trip to Bad Homburg and go to the Hutmuseum which contains hats from over 400 years. Many of these were worn by very famous individuals.
