Zur Sonne
Edit This
Despite repeated references in guides about Frankfurt, it is just not
true that genuine cider taverns are
located in Sachsenhausen. Locals or insiders know that these are to be
found in Bornheim or Seckbach. An all time favourite is, without a
doubt, the over 100 year-old “Zur Sonne” which resides in a picturesque
timber-frame house (built 1768) in the old area of Bornheim.
Residents in the area have a saying: “Auf zur Sonne!” (Off to the sun!). It is more frequently used during the warmer months when large crowds gather – already during the afternoon - for a “Schoppen” in the wonderful garden under chestnut trees, but it is in winter that its charm really shines. It is the season when the kitchen goes a little beyond the classic cider-tavern fare and serves succulent game-dishes with all those wonderful homemade dumplings and red cabbage. Cider – “Bembel” wise - is what the place is all about yet beer or wine drinkers are also well taken care of. The same applies to vegetarians, for whom something, fresh and tasty, can always be created on the spot.
The interior, down to the tile-oven, is centuries old and extremely “Gemütlich”. Service, on the other hand, rest assured, is young and jovial.
Cider taverns are, with long wooden tables, which are frequently shared, convivial by nature. High entertainment value is, most of the time, guaranteed.
A choice of three dining rooms, make it very suitable for large group arrangements.
Last but not least, the “Zur Sonne” can be reached directly from the trade-fair grounds (Messe) with the U4 in around 15 minutes followed by a short walk. “Auf zur Sonne!” then …
