Ratsweinkeller
Edit ThisThis "wine cellar" has been opened in 1896 and is literally located in the celler of Hamburg's famous Rathaus (City Hall). Additionaly to the very comfortable atmosphere the meals are a great deal; main dishes and menus are ranging from 10 - 50 $ and will easily satisfy you, both in size and quality! Very often reservations is required.
While the restaurant has a varied menu, consider trying its real specialty: herring. In fact, the herring is prepared in over ten different ways, each unique and as tasty as can be (the classic dish is herring prepared in the "HausFrauenArt" style). Some local Hamburgers even say this is the best place to get your herring fix!
Keep in mind that while the Ratsweinkeller is a comfortable restaurant, it is also rather formal where the gentile are dressed in classic fashion (and the men particular in suit and often tie). You'll feel the true sea-faring spirit of Hamburg as you sit among fine oil paintings of old galleys and transport ships of yesteryears. A real classic Hamburg spot.
