There is a wealth of cruise opportunities available in Germany.

Rhine Cruises

One of the most popular is a Rhine cruise along the longest river in Europe, taking in some beautiful and breathtaking scenery and views.

Viking River Cruises fly out from Munich for their Rhine cruise aboard the Viking Fontane, embarking upon the boat at Nuremburg--famous for its Imperial Castle. From there, the boat sails on to Bamberg, Wurzburg--with its cathedral--and onto Heidelberg with its impressive Schloss (castle).  Day 5 of the itinerary see's the traveler entering the Rhine Valley and the sixth day brings the medieval old town of Cochem into view. Days 7 and 8 are spent in historic Trier with its Roman baths and lovely cafes and restaurants, flying out from Frankfurt and back to Munich later on the eighth day. The brochure price is from $3000, includes internal flights and evenings spent on board the ship.

AMM Waterways, a company specializing in deluxe Rhine cruises, offers 7 nights' accommodation in an outside stateroom, including complimentary Internet, bathrobes and many other added extras. Their Europe's Heartland Cruise begins along the Main-Danube Canal from Nuremberg, and travels past historical and picturesque little towns, stopping for passengers to enjoy the delights and the hospitality of the local taverns and their hearty food such as sauerkraut and sausages.

Sailing along past beautiful castles is one of the true highlights of a Rhine river cruise. Coupled with the incredible and lush scenery, this area of Germany, and indeed Europe is truly a joy to behold. The people themselves are very hospitable and enjoy making tourists and cruisers welcome on various ports of call and stages of the journey.

Most Rhine cruises stop include Trier, located on the banks of the Moselle River. The fact Trier is 2000 years old  and the oldest city in Germany, make the city one well worth a visit.

Danube Cruises

Another tour with Viking, who are specialists in this area is the  Danube Waltz cruise which takes you through four countries--Austria, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia--on an 8-day cruise. From $1356, one can fly into Munich, embark on the ship and take in the historical sights of Passau, Linz and Salzburg in Austria, location of the film "The Sound of Music." Other stops include Vienna and Budapest. Breakfasts, lunches and evening meals are all included in the price.
