Family Travel Ideas in Bremen
Edit ThisBremen is a naturally family friendly city, located along the River Weser. Most of the city's famous attractions entertain both kids and adults, and provide an educational element as well. What more could you ask for from a city with so much history and modern innovation?
Monuments
Two of the most important places to visit are the Weser-Renaissance Townhall and The Roland Statue in Market Square. These are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites that you and your family cannot miss. The Townhall has beautiful, detailed architecture, while the Roland has been standing in honor of independence since 1404. The Schnoor is another place that you can't miss. It's the oldest district in Bremen with strange, old buildings and the well-known Town Musicians Statue, displaying the rooster, cat, dog and donkey from the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.
Museums
If your kids get bored looking at stationary historical monuments, you can get more interactive with history by visiting the House of History. Here, characters from Bremen's history live again, proudly explaining their lives and the times in which they lived. To get even further back in time, check out The Focke Museum, which explores the history of the region from the present back until prehistory in an interactive, kid-friendly atmosphere.
For science lovers and non-science lovers alike, the Universum Science Center will keep your family entertained for hours, or maybe even days! Fun and interactive, this center has three sections:
- The actual science center, which has 250 interactive areas discovering topics like the cosmos, earth, and mankind.
- The Entdecker Park, which has 25 stations on movement as well as experiments involving wind and water.
- The SchauBox, which highlights special exhibitions every year about the shapes and colors in nature.
At the Ethnological Museum of Bremen, you and your kids can travel throughout the world in a little over an hour, viewing exotic art from different regions, amazing animals and plants from all over the world, intricate artifacts of silver, gold and copper, and much more. The entrance ticket costs 6.50 Euros for adults and 2.50 Euros for children. The Kunsthalle is the oldest exhibition of culture in the city and is considered one of the best art galleries in the country. It's not very interactive, so your children may or may not like it, but if your kids happen to like art, it's worth a visit. The EADs Astrium makes for an incredible trip, especially if you or your children have ever dreamed of being astronauts. Here you can learn about astronauts and how they prepare for their journeys into space and a zero gravity zone. Learn how they live and do daily activities without gravity, including eating, sleeping and showering. It's both interesting and educational.
Other Things To Do
A visit to Bremen is not all about hurrying and running around to different places. Your family can also enjoy the city just by relaxing along the Schlachte Embankment, either walking around, soaking up the sun or playing games. Stroll through various open air markets or check out the events of Freimarkt, the maritime festivals or the Christmas market, if you're in the city during those times of the year.
