Hostels
The Berlin Mitte District is home to several low
budget sources of accommodation. The Circus Hostel is a perfect example
of what budget accommodation is like in the Berlin Mitte district. This
particular hostel along with a host of others come highly recommended
for cleanliness and affordability. Generally hostels will offer a
variety of room sizes and prices from small dormitories of 8 or more
beds, double rooms, single rooms and apartment facilities. With regards
to the Circus hostel, prices start at 20 Euros per night and rise to
140 for a full service apartment. The Circus hostel offers free
airport pick up and has an abundance of information available on
walking tours and rentals. The Circus Hostel has 3 restaurants that
guests are welcome to use serving a wide range of dishes. The Circus

Food
Great food doesn't have to cost a fortune, even in
Berlin. A favorite place among Humboldt University students is Depoine
no.3. Depoine no.3 can be reached by taking the U-Bahn or the S-Bahn
and alighting at Georgenstrasse. The interior of the restaurant is some
what mismatched trying to create a pub atmosphere while being loaded
down with eclectic antiques. However, this place is an excellent source
for German food. Most meals cost less that 10 euros and the portion
sizes are huge.
Just down the road from Depoine no.3 is another excellent eatery choice called Cum Laude. Appropriately named for the number of university students and staff that frequent it, Cum Laude emits a tasteful old collegiate atmosphere. Although technically and Mediterranean restaurant the best choices tend to be those from the area. Piked perch in creamy cucumber sauce seems to be a local favorite. 10 euros is said to keep one full for hours but several dishes on the menu cost under 7.
Entertainment
By traveling to Auguststasse in former East
Berlin, you'll stumble across a plethora of art galleries that are open
to the public and free. This street is known in English as Berlin's
artist mile featuring everything from classic to post modern.
Photographer, Peter Dittmar owns a gallery along this stretch and with
luck you may even catch a glimpse of him between travels. The Artist's
mile is also an excellent place to learn about Berlin's underground art
scene. Many of the galleries will be full of fliers advertising
upcoming events in this area.
