Sights in Wurzburg

Be part of the hustle and bustle of the local market that is held every day. The market sells a variety of produce and it is a fun activity to spend the morning browsing the stalls. The market is located at the main square in the town and it is closed on Sundays.
Residenz
The Residenz is a palace which is a popular tourist attraction. The rooms are intricately decorated and other noteworthy attractions include the staircase, Tiepolo ceiling and the Imperial Hall. Spectacular art is on display and there is a tennis court. English guided tours are available.
Marienberg Fortress
If you cross over the Old Bridge you will reach the Marienberg Fortress. It was constructed in the 13th century. There are views of the city and river. Get to the fortress by walking or catching a bus. The fortress was originally a Celtic building before Prince Bishop lived there. It was damaged during a war and was reconstructed using a Baroque style. Inside the fortress is the Mainfrankisches Museum. Here you can see gold jewelry and models of the city. There are tours available. The surrounding area is perfect for hiking and there are trails to follow.
St Kilian's Cathedral
Work on the cathedral began in 788 and the building shows German architecture. The cathedral was damaged in a fire but has been restored.
Old Bridge
The Old Bridge is decorated with statues of saints. It was constructed in 1133 and restored in 1533. It is a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

Residenz

Today it is a UNESCO-World Heritage - a main work of South German Baroque period and one of Europe's most ornate palaces. Visitors can admire the unique famed staircase with cantilever cupola and largest ceiling-painting of the world by the Venetian Tiepolo. Alte Marienbruecke

Mainfränkisches Museum
Edit ThisLocated in the former arsenal this museum contains sculptures by Riemenschneider and examples of all genres of art across the ages, as well as an interesting display on Franconian wine. The fortress it is housed in, Festung Marienburg, dates to 1201 and contains a 13th-century church, and the Renaissance-Baroque palace that served as the residence of the bishops of Wuerzburg until 1719.

Cathedral with Crypt and cloister
Edit ThisWurzburg's Cathedral, consecrated to St. Kilian too, was burned out in 1945, so only the exterior is true to the original Romanesque cathedral built in 1045-1188. South of the Dom building you will find the large, picturesque cloister. You can enter from the southern transverse part of the Dom and from the so-called "Burkardushaus". Neumünsterkirche and Lusamgärtlein
Edit ThisLeading off the Market place, the Neumunster's dusky pink facade stands out among the postwar houses. This Romanesque basilica of the 11th century has a 13th century choir and ornate tower, imposing cupola and Baroque facade (1710-1716) and is built on the burial site of St. Kilian. In the Lusam Garden is the grave of the minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide.

Rathaus

Marienkapelle
Edit ThisLate Gothic chapel of the rich citizens, begun in 1377, completed about 1481. Decorated with rich ornamental sculptures. The interior has been renewed after a fire in 1945. Noteworthy is the "Beautiful Madonna", about 1400, numerous tombstones of Franconian knights and townsmen, among them Riemenschneider’s tombstone of the great Baroque architect Neumann.

Stachel and Rückermainhof
Edit ThisThe "Stachel", mentioned in 1413 for the first time, is one of the typical courts with romantic courtyard. Next to it is the Vorderer Gressenhof, one of Würzburg’s most beautiful Renaissance courts. The Rückermainhof, built by Greising in 1715, was once the headquarter of the St. Burkard foundation.
