Experience a Bit of Africa in Germany

Wurzburg has the largest festival for African music and culture. The African festival has been going on since 1990. Each year the festival focuses on a different theme as it not only focuses on Africa but also the countries where Africans reside and exhibits display African history and the new culture that the people have created. Mozart, Bach and Jazz

The largest festival in Wurzburg is the Mozart Festival. This is the oldest Mozart festival in the world and goes on for 4 weeks. Mozart has absolutely no ties with the town but it is the combination of music and architecture that helped this festival start in 1921. A highlight is the night music which is played in the garden of the Residenz Palace. Many famous musicians and artist have performed at the Mozart Festival such as Yehudi Menuhin, Alred Brendel, Sir Neville Marriner and more.

The Bach festival is a celebration of Bach’s music as there are performances by the Bach orchestra, the Bach choir, oratorios, piano recitals, organ concerts and even an evening of Bach lieder. The Bach festival occurs in November as does the annual jazz festival. The Jazz Initiative has been going on since 1984 and focuses on contemporary jazz musicians as well as regional German jazz musicians.

The U and D

For 10 days in June people celebrate the Umsonst & Draussen festival. This is 2 weeks of music, poems, arts and food. See international and local acts and visit the many stalls and other acts. The main purpose of this festival is to stimulate cultural life. It is used to help leisure services for the youth of the area, musical talent, promote contact between artists and promote a peaceful coexistence between all.

Taste a Little Wine

Wurzburg is in the center of a world famous wine region and there are many wine festivals throughout the year. In the summer there are no less than 6. The Win Village festival is the first of the wine season and there are more than 40 tents put up in the marketplace during the 10-day festival. You can taste hundreds of different wines from the region. There are also many wine festivals in the surrounding towns.
