Family Travel Ideas in Wurzburg
Edit ThisThere are many different options for Wurzburg family travel in this German city. Wurzburg is just an hour’s drive from Frankfurt which has an international airport. There are many fun places to visit with the family. Wurzburg is the first stop for many on the romantic road of Bavaria.
Stop at the Fortress
Marienburg Fortress should be one of your first trips as you can see the entire city from this vantage point. This fortress took 700 years to build and housed the prince bishop until 1719. The walls date from the 15th century and you should first enter through the Scherenberg gate. Make sure you spend some time in the arsenal which is a museum.
Residenze Palace and Veitschochheim Castle
A UNESCO cultural heritage site is the Residenz Palace. This is one of the best examples of Baroque architecture found in Europe. This palace is very ornate and has many features that mirror other famous palaces, such as the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles. The frescoes on the wall were painted by a Venetian and you can see the largest ceiling painting in the world. The gardens are also beautiful and you should walk through. This is a great place for kids to run around a bit after walking through the interior of the palace.
Take a boat ride and go visit Veitschochheim Castle. This castle is about an hour from the city and has some of the best Rococo architecture. It also has a famous Baroque garden where there is a horticultural research facility. Take some lunch with you and enjoy your boat trip and time at the castle.
Visit St. Kilian’s
One of the largest cathedrals in Germany is in Wurzburg, the St. Kilian Cathedral. This cathedral has a row of bishops’ tombs including one of the first ever ruling prince bishops. St. Kilian was actually an Irish missionary who worked in the area in the 7th century and the cathedral is named after him. It is free to visit the cathedral though open hours are reduced on Sunday.
Gorgeous Shopping Area
A great place for shopping is the Schonbornstrasse. The buildings on this street all have yellow stucco facades with white trim making it a picturesque area to visit. This is the very center of the market areas which has many restaurants, shops and cafes. There are fast food stands and flower stands. At Christmas there are plenty of lovely window displays and special goodies. Across the way is the Alte Mainbrucke which is an old bridge lined with stone historical figures.
