Shopping in Oberammergau
Edit This
The city center of Obermmergau is filled with all kinds of
shops, ranging from woodcarving to clothes to jewelry to Bavarian cheeses and
chocolates. While the town has a few
malls, including the renowned Bavarian Shopping Mall, you can often find the
best goods from small, mom-and-pop shops. Below lists the best of the best culled
by World66 staff:
Woodcarving Crafts and Goods
Famous for its woodcarvings, most of the gorgeous crafts featured in Obermmergau’s shops are often handmade from the best quality wood (such as pine, maple and cherry) by the most detailed and talented local artists. Many of these crafts are religious figurines depicted from the 14th century, but some also feature hunting, pastoral and nature scenes.
Some of the most famous tourist shops in Obermmergau featuring these woodcarvings are The Holzschittschule Wood Carving School, the Baur Anton and the Pilatushaus Shop, all easily accessible from the city center by foot, bus or cab. The Holzschitischule is known for its friendly staff and students who are happy to take you around and show you exactly how the wood is carved. Baur Anton prides itself on its vast array of woodcarvings, especially those representing scenes from the medieval time. Finally, at Pilatushaus Shop, the craftsmen will let you try your hand at a carving! At all three of these of these stores you can get woodcarvings for cheap or expensive, depending on what you’re looking for, the size, and the quality of the wood. You can also request that your piece remain unstained or unfinished without gloss. Hours at these three stores vary, so call in advance. Also, keep in mind that these are just three woodcarving stores – you’ll find at least one or two of these shops on every street!
Ammergauer Käse Alm, Oberammergau
Oberammergau’s best cheese shop, Ammergauer Kase Alm is worth paying a visit to sample over a dozen Bavarian cheeses. You can enjoy the cheese with a glass of local wine or partake in a full-course meal (most often featuring a variety of the delicious Bavarian cheese). Located in the Dofstrasse area of Oberammergau.
Fritz Paulisch Textiles
Fritz Paulisch is one of the largest shopping and textile centers in Oberammeragu, featuring a variety of clothes, jewelry, local handmade crafts (more woodcarvings) and ideal, cheap wooden souvenirs. Fritz Paulisch is open every day and located downtown.
Hermann Schilcher Crafts
Located on the village street of Dofstrasse, Hermann Schilcher is worth visiting if you are looking for artwork, paintings, local handmade crafts, intricately painted dolls and woodcarved owls. Postcards and stocking knickknacks available at a discounted price, especially during the holidays.
