Rich with culture and natural beauty, Oberammergau remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Bavaria. A host of transportation options exist in order to reach this idyllic town.

Train

Tourists traveling by train will arrive at the town’s main station, Oberammergau Bahnhof, which lies across the river on the opposite side of the city center. Travel from Munich takes only two hours, while the journey from Frankfurt takes seven hours. Both cities offer daily service to Oberammergau. Train travel remains available from most directions, with the majority of the connections occurring in southern town of Murnau.

Car

Many tourists decide against public transportation, preferring to drive to Oberammergau instead. Driving offers a faster commute than most trains. FThe drive from Munich runs about 1½ hours, while the Frankfurt journey takes approximately 5½ hours. It’s an easy drive with the B-23 bringing motorists directly to town. Drivers originating from Munich will discover that the major Autobahn A-95 seamlessly connects to the B-23.

Air

Three major airport facilities lie within close distance to Oberammergau: Munich, Salzburg and Innsbruck. Although Innsbruck remains the closest to town (only 43 miles), many tourists prefer landing in Munich, as the German city offers tremendous motorway and train access to Oberammergau. A host of major airlines service all three regions.

Bus

The Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers regional bus service to Oberammergau via its bustling bus station, RVO Regionalverkehr Oberbayern. During non-winter months, the town of Füssen shuttles approximately four buses a day to Oberammergau.
