Getting Around in Oberammergau

Edit This

Oberammergau is mostly know for the elaborate live performance of the Passion of the Christ and the NATO School. However this town also has a long tradition of woodcarving and painting, so it is not unusual that on the weekends local artists showcase their works at public plazas and squares.

Getting around Oberammergau by Car

If you're driving from Munchen or any of its neighboring cities, you will take the A-95 highway and eventually merge into the B-23. The main roads of Oberammergau are the Bahnhof Strasse in the north, the Eugen-Papt Strasee in the heart of the town, and Ettaler Strasse in the south.

It is important to point out that there is no taxi service in Oberammergau so you will need to park your car in different places if you decide to travel long distances. When parking, pay close attention to the signs to avoid tickets. Also, please notice that certain parts of town may have very low speed limits and if you don't respect them, you might get caught by one of the speed cameras. Remember that speeding tickets in Germany are quite expensive.

Getting around Oberammergau by Walking

A popular walking tour begins at the intersection of Bahnhof Strasse and Eugen-Papt Strasse. After you find a parking space, you can follow Othmar Weiss Strasse either to the North or South to find over 10 beautiful works of sculpture and woodcarving. The Path of the Sculputures ( Skulpturenweg in German) runs between the Theater of the Passion, the Museum of Oberammergaum and the House of Ammergauer. Throughout the Path of the Sculptures, you will see the winning works of a sculpture competition called Menschenbild.
