Eating Out in Oberammergau

Edit This

Oberammergau’s gastronomical identity is sketched by its humble, value-for-money eating joints and imbiss bars that serve food along with drinks. There are also some swanky fine dining restaurants in up-market neighborhoods, and five star hotels along with a series of international fast food chains. At heart, Oberammergau remains a non-fussy eater’s paradise. The kind of eaters who love to polish off their grub sitting on a nice, unassuming sidewalk café.

Zur Rose

This is one of the most popular eateries in the town and features some great Bavarian cuisine. Try the sinful ham with cheese preparation and the Kaiserschmarn. The shrimp salad, unlike a lot of other places, actually has a lot of shrimp in it. There are innumerable fish dishes and a wholesome green salad with a dressing twist. A hearty meal for two should set you back by about 25 Euros. Zur Rose is located at Dedlerstr 9 on the main street.

Charly’s Imbiss

This is a classic bar-cum-restaurant that is famous for its delicious and large burgers. There is a whole variety of them, including a salad burger for the more health conscious and an array of generously filled meat burgers for carnivores. The place also has some nice and light desserts.

La Montanara

La Montanara, located at Schnitzlergasse 10, is the place to head to for mouth-melting Italian cuisine in a fine dining ambiance. They have a great range of pizzas and pastas; especially notable is the pasta served with four different varieties of premium cheese. The prices, like most Italian fine dining hotspots, are slightly on the higher side. There is a nice outdoor seating, ideal for lunch on a pleasant summer afternoon.

Ammergauer Maxbrau

Ammergauer Maxbrau, located inside the Maximilian Hotel on Ettaler Strasse 5, serves thoroughbred German cuisine, that though a tad too pricey, is well worth it if you take into account the entire experience. Have delicious crunchy pork to go with their in-house brewed beer. There are also some nice, fancy steaks and unique soups for connoisseurs of fine German cuisine.

Zauberstub’n

This is a pleasant English eatery that to begin with, boasts of a nice terrace ambiance and rooftop view. The food offers great value for money and the service is top notch. Here’s the scene stealer that beats all the other pluses of this chic, al fresco diner. The owner Vlado is an amusing entertainer, who performs superb table magic tricks and helps you thoroughly enjoy your dinner. Zauberstub’n is housed on the busy Ettaler Str. 58.

Small town Oberammergau is no gourmet haven, though it does feature a range of fine dining options, humble sidewalk cafes and traditional imbiss restaurants.
