Bars and Cafes in Oberammergau
Edit ThisTravelers will be sure to find wonderful food and drink in the cafes and bars in the Alpine village of Oberammergau . Both abound in this year-round destination. They are filled with the charm of the area, the wonderful mountain views and there are many locals who enjoy meeting and greeting their foreign guests. While most bars and cafes offer a wide assortment of food and drink, not all bars serve food here.
Cafes
Many cafes are located in the various hotels in Oberammergau , and they feature local Bavarian food as well as libations. One of the most popular is in, and outside, the Hotel Alte Post. Located right in downtown Oberammergau , tourists can sit outside and enjoy a beer or Bavarian specialty while watching hand gliders swoosh down into the valley below. Many smaller cafés sell hot drinks rather than alcoholic drinks and some are dedicated to selling ice cream and coffee, but most have a wide range of alcoholic options. Another popular café is located in the Hotel Turmwirt, which is also in the downtown area and close to everything. This one, like most, offers local fare in addition to more international dishes.
Sauberstubn
One of the largest and well-known of the cafes is called Sauberstubn. With room for more than 80 customers, this institution prides itself on its sauerbraten and deer steaks. From the restaurant terrace, diners will have a view of the "Kofel," an Oberammergau landmark, a rather low craggy peak in the Alps that is a favorite among hikers. In addition to its large number of meat entrees, Sauberstubn also has a good assortment of salads, fish and noodle dishes. This café is a destination for many tourists.
Bars
There are a large number of bars in Oberammergau and some of them (imbiss) serve food as well at a relatively low cost. Other bars serve only drinks. And there is one unique bar called Kino Café that is a combination of a bar and a movie theater. It’s a big hangout for young people.
For those not looking for a swinging spot, there is the more upscale bar at the trendy Maximilian Hotel , which also features a beer garden where its own brew is served. Charley’s Imbiss is an impressive rustic bar, offering views of the mountains from the wooden tables outside the establishment. While the choice of snacks is not huge, it does offer local delicacies for tourists to indulge in.
