7 Day Itinerary in Oberammergau
Edit ThisThe idyllic town of Oberammergau is famous for its Passion Play. One of the largest and oldest passion plays in the world, once every 10 years Oberammergau's villagers tell the story of Jesus of Nazareth
in a large-scale production that uses thousands of the local
townspeople. The Passion Play runs from approximately May to October at
the beginning of each decade, 2010, 2020, etc... Although the Passion Play is the principle tourist attraction of Oberammergau
, it has been left out of this itinerary because it only happens once a
decade.
Day 1
You can not fly directly into Oberammergau, so book your flight into Munich. This opens up a good opportunity to explore Munich, if you are interested. When you are ready, rent a car to drive into Oberammergau, to give you a better opportunity to explore the area around the village. Check into your hotel and, if you have time, start to explore the town.
Day 2
On your first full day in Oberammergau, explore the town. Oberammergau is a fairly small town, so you can walk pretty much anywhere. Key things to look for are wood carvings, which Oberammergau is famous for and make great souvenirs, and the murals, which you will find on many of the homes and buildings.
Day 3
Now that you've had a chance to relax, it's time to head out to the slopes. Oberammergau offers 2 main local ski areas. Kolben offers beginning to intermediate terrain, while the nearby Laber offers more advanced runs.
Day 4
Time to head out of Oberammergau proper. Stop at one of the small hotels on your way out of town to enjoy some authentic local food. Sights to see around Oberammergau include Ettal Abbey, which contains a brewery, and Linderhof Castle, built by King Ludwig II of Germany.
Day 5
Another great way to ski in Oberammergau is cross-country. During the winter you can find trails all around the town, and the picturesque surroundings of the town make for a great atmosphere. If cross-country isn't your thing, just head back out to main ski areas.
Day 6
Your last full day in Oberammergau is a great opportunity to revisit your favorite spots. The truly dedicated will hit the slopes again, but if you feel like a more relaxing day, stay around town, revisiting favorite restaurants or trying new ones, and make sure you've got all your shopping for gifts and souvenirs finished.
Day 7
Time to head back to Munich. If you give yourself a late flight you can take some more time to explore Munich before heading home.Contributors
