Neuschwanstein schloss

Iñaki Amuchastegui

World-famous fairy-tale castle built by King Ludwig II on an imposing rock in the seclusion of the mountains. Close by are the old castle of Hohenschwangau and the crystal clear Alpsee lake. About two hours by car from Munich.

Although the inside of the castle was never finished by king Ludwig, it is still an impressive view. There is a little bridge where you can hike to from where you can have a full view of the castle on the top of the mountain and the two lakes on the background. No wonder Disney was inspired by this Castle. Neuschwanstein is located in the city of Allgau, which can be accessed from Fussen by car or by bus on a 15 minutes ride. Public transport from Munich to Fussen is frequent by train. The castle can be reached in three different ways: by foot from the city of Allgau on a 30 minute walk uphill, not suitable for elderly or handicapped, by car or by horse carriage, and by bus. The bus approaches the castle from "behind", arriving near the most famous view of the castle from Marienbrucke. The walk from Marienbrucke to the castle is 20 minutes on a not very practicable road, being again not suitable but for reasonably fit people.
