Family Travel Ideas in Munich

Circus Krone
Circus Krone was founded by Carl Krone in 1905 and is the largest in Europe. The acrobats, animals and clowns will thrill and delight children and adults alike. The circus performs daily in the summer and travels during the winter months.
Bavariafilmplatz
Munich has a movie studio called Bavariafilmplatz that is a theme park and studio. There is a 90-minute tour in English every day where you can see the sets, watch a stunt show and see much more of the workings of the studio. There are special prices for families.
Tierpark Hellabrunn
The zoo, called Tierpark Hellabrunn, has been around for 90 years. The open exhibits shows off nearly 5000 animals. There is also a petting zoo and pony and camel rides.
Viktualienmarkt
Make sure to take the family to the farmers' market, called Viktualienmarkt. This is an open air market that features foods from all over the world. You can choose Chinese, Lebanese, Western or German food here. Many of the vendors dress in traditional Bavarian clothing and this visit can be cultural as well as fun.
Mareinplatz
Be sure to spend time downtown in the Mareinplatz, or town square, that faces town hall. The famous glockenspiel sounds at 11 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. when beautiful figures come out of the clock and dance around. The Mareinplatz is a pedestrian-only area and there are many different shops and cafes around where visitors can browse and eat.
Speilzeugmuseum
The kids will love the Toy Museum, the Speilzeugmuseum, at the old Town Hall. Toys from all over the world are on display, including doll houses and the famous teddy bear.
Residenz
The Residenz is the 14th century palace where the crown jewels of Bavaria reside. Even the smallest child will be amazed by the opulence of the place when they tour the 10 rooms of incredible furnishings and jewelry.
Munchner Stadmuseum
The City Museum, the Munchner Stadmuseum, has wooden models of Munich from the 16th and 17th century and paintings of city scenes on the walls. There is a special exhibit of home life from the past. Another museum, the Deutsches Museum, has dioramas that will be of interest to both children and adults. There are many hands-on demonstrations here as well that the whole family will enjoy.
The Puppet Theater
The Puppet Theater is a must for families. There a huge collection of marionettes including Punch and Judy and puppet shows, as well.
