Edit ThisBerchtesgaden things to do are many and wondrous, full of history and good times to be had by all. Whether it is taking great hikes through lush forests or trying your hand at bob sledding, when visiting Berchtesgaden things to do are only limited by your imagination and time.
Königsee
This town is known for a few things. It has the status of being near the deepest lake in the Alps. Boat rides are available to the other side of the lake to tour the Kloster St. Bartoloma and take a short walk to see the smaller lake. The National Park is full of wildlife and great hikes. Sign posts mark the way,. They display what trail the visitor is on, how long it is and how difficult it is to hike.
Documentation Center Obersalzberg
For those interested in the history of Hitler and his government, this little known about place is full of photographs and documentation of the Nazi regime. Guided tours are available as well as audio guides for those visitors that do not speak German. Some of the photographs are detailed and not suitable for younger children.
The Eagles Nest
To visit this sight, the traveler must leave the car in town and take a bus or walk up. This building was built for Hitler to use as a retreat. However, Hitler did not like the journey on the way up and did not visit often. The Eagles Nest was used for meeting of Hitler's Officers and other important people of that time. This is the most popular of the sights and definitely very interesting. Plus, at the dizzying height of 1,834 m the view from the top will leave the traveler speechless.
Skiing
Ski the Alps no matter what level the visitor is. Berchtesgaden offers slopes for the beginner at Golf and Ski am Obersalzberg and Jenner is ready to take on the most advanced skier. Cross-country skiing is also available and skiing tours of the Alps for the more advanced skiers. January can be a dangerous time to ski here as avalanches can occur more frequently.
Sledding
Bobsledding is not just a winter sport in Berchtesgaden, it is also a fun activity in the summertime as well. Hop the Oberslazbergbahn, the second smaller car in Berchtesgaden, and the traveler will be taken nearly to the top of the Obersalzber, and can bobsled down. Feel the thrill of the moment as you race down the hill in one of these fast sleds. Be an Olympian for a day.
