Visit the Royal Palace in Berchtesgaden

There is one museum in Berchtesgaden that stands out from the rest of the Berchtesgaden Museums, and that is the Royal Palace. It was built back in 1102, and functioned as a monastery and seminary of monks belonging to the Augistine order. However, in 1803 the Augustine order was secularized by the emperor, and in 1810 the building became a summer residence of the Wittelsbach royal family. From 1922 to 1933 this was the home of Crown Prince Rupprecht. Today, the Royal Palace functions as a museum of history, art and architecture.

Fees and Schedule

The museum is open every day, except Saturday. Working times are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May 16 to October 15 (with an afternoon break from 12 noon to 2 p.m.) and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 16th October to 15th May. The admission fee is $9 for adults, $4.5 for students and $3.5 for children ages 6 to 12 years. However special discount cards are available to families with children, allowing them to enter the Royal Palace for just $20. The museum is exclusively closed on Christmas Day, New Year, August 19 to August 28 and September 17 to September 19. All visits to the museum are guided and last about 50 minutes.

Exhibits

The exhibits on display are part of the Wittelsbach family art collection. The collection includes various weapons and hunting trophies, expensive porcelain wares, elegant furniture, and paintings of famous Bavarian artists. The building is an architecture wonder by itself, displaying Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Rococo and Biedermeier architectural styles.
