Sights in Augsburg

Augsburg is a beautiful city that still maintains a large degree of its Renaissance character despite World War II damage.  The highlight is the Maximilianstrasse, which features many fine houses with fancy Renaissance gables and three magnificent fountains.  Just off this main road stands the Italian style mansion of the powerful Fugger banking clan, built in 1512-15.  Another fine feature of the Altstadt is the 17th- century armory.

Cathedral of the Holy Virgin

The original Romanesque cathedral was built in 994-1065 and some features still survive from this period, including the two towers.  The cathedral was remodelled in the Gothic style between 1331-1431 with the addition of two side aisles, a choir and ambulatory, and a ring of chapels.  The cathedral boasts a bronze Romanesque door with 35 panels depicting allegorical figures and stained glass from 1410.

The Rathaus (City Hall) was built by Elias Holl in 1615-16 and is one of the most impressive Mannerist buildings in all of Germany.  It features a magnificently restored wood coffered ceiling.

The Rathaus was destroyed in 1944 and reconstructed in 1947-1962.

Incide you'll find a model of the old city.

Upstairs there is the Goldener Saal, city's main meeting hall. The room is 14m-high and 32m-long and it is covered with a thin layer of gold leaf. It is well worth visiting.
