Mannheim is located in a county called Baden-Wurttemberg in eastern Germany. Mannheim is only about an hour south of Frankfurt by car, bordering the county of Hessen. With a population of 327,318 (2006), Mannheim looks uniquely like North American cities in comparison to German cities. The city is set up in a quadrant-style so city block are much like those you'd see in the US or Canada. The Rhine and Neckar rivers come together in Mannheim. The city was first mentioned in 766 but it is no doubt that the population was growing even before then.

What to See

There are numerous historical attractions in Mannheim. Perhaps the most popular site in the city is the Mannheim Palace. This palace is also part of the University of Mannheim. Mannheim Palace was built in the 1700s, but the city’s official land mark is the water tower. The Luisenpark is said to be one of the most beautiful in Germany, sitting right along the Neckar River. The park has a greenhouse, boat rides and numerous activities for children. The Jesuit church of Mannheim was built from 1733-1756. Both the outside and in are very unique and beautifully adorned.

Where to Eat

German food varies by region and Mannheim is a city that has many options when it comes to food. Palatinate and Swabian (parts of Germany) foods are popular as are dishes from other areas in Germany and they don't lack international cuisine. If you like seafood, try the restaurant, Kopenhagen restaurant. For international cuisine, Da Gianni is a great Italian restaurant. For local dishes of Badensian and Alsatian (German-speaking area of France), try Doblers Restaurant L'Epi d'Or. These restaurants can be a bit expensive, as they are very high-quality, but you can always find more affordable restaurants around the corner.

Where to Stay

For the budget traveler, Hotel Luxa is a good accommodation; clean, comfortable and affordable. The hotel is run by a family, so expect a friendly and helpful atmosphere. The hotel is in a great part of the city where all sites are accessible. Prices start at around $45 per person per night in a 4-bed dorm. For about $96 per night, you can get a room in the Hotel am Bismarck. Breakfast is included in the cost and there are both smoking and non-smoking rooms available. Hotel am Bismarck is located very near the city center and a short walking distance from the central station.
