Heidelberg Castle

Jennifer McElhannon

Heidelberg Castle alone is a reason for visiting the city. This castle, designed mostly in the Renaissance style, is considered one of the most important cultural monuments in Germany. Several hundred thousand people visit per year.

The Castle Garden (hortus palatinus) around the castle is another major attraction.

The University Library was erected from 1901 to 1905 using motifs of the so called "Deutschmanierismus" (an ornamental style of German architecture dating back to the late 16th century) and combining them with elements of the "Jugendstil" (l'art nouveau style).

Heidelberg Castle

Edit This

After having been destroyed several times in history, it has partly been a ruin for more than 200 years. Since the 19th century that has grown the image of it to be a romantic place. Litterally lighting up this image does the Castle Lighting, which takes place three times every summer: As it is getting dark, the castle is filled with a glow of fire and a lot of smoke coming from many burning pots placed in and around the castle. (Dates in 2000: June 3, July 8, September 2.) The Lighting ends with a big firework. Map

Admission: 4DM (reduced rate 2DM) for castle yard, great more..

The Castle Garden (hortus palatinus) was designed by the famous garden architect Salomon de Caus, who built several terraces around the castle, giving a great view onto the castle, the Old Town and even into the Rhine Valley. Do not be surprised, if you meet a young couple taking wedding photos in the garden. Map

Admission: Free.
