Hiking Tours

One thing travelers must do in the Black Forest is hike. There are many hiking tours available that can last anywhere from a few hours to many hours or days. Hiking in the forest has been going on for over 100 years and that is evident as the trails are well marked. One place to visit is the Gutach River where water slips and slides over 600 feet of seven steps that were created naturally. 

Baths Near Baden-Baden

After that hike you may want to indulge in the baths near Baden-Baden. These are spas that have been around for about 125 years. There are 16 stages to go through from air baths, steam baths, whirlpool baths, and cold baths all designed to refresh your body and mind. In most baths no clothing is worn, but everything seems very non sexual.There are several that will allow you to wear a bathing suit. The experience runs about €30 but can be less in some cases.

German Clock Museum

This is cuckoo clock territory and you will find them in almost every shop. Visit the German Clock museum (Deutches Uhrenmuseum) in Furtwangen. Here you will see the world’s largest historical clock collection and on the hour there is quite a cacophony of sound coming from all those clocks.  


Open Air Mueseum

Another must do in the Black Forest is the Open Air Museum (Freilichtmuseum Vogtsbauernhof). Visitors can visit actual Black Forest farmhouses and see local artisans busy at work doing the jobs of yesterday. The buildings are built from the wood of the forest and are old style with the living room in the middle of the house to symbolize the center of the family. Kitchens have a tiled stoves across from which is the Hergottswinkle or "Place of God" with a small altar. Hand carved saints, along with the Virgin Mary, are usually placed there. These homes are handed down from generation to generation. 

Freiburg Cathedral

Freiburg Cathedral is a definite must do in the Black Forest. Outside the spire is most beautiful looking like hand carved lace. Inside is just as memorable with many sculptures in wood and stone, paintings, and stained glass. The Cathedral was built in the middle ages and there are several chapels behind the high carved altar and there are four pipe organs.
