Must see sights are: (Heading east from Tbilisi)
The Cathedral of Ninotsminda approximately 30 miles east of Tbilisi on road A302. The Monastery Complex of David-Gareja and Udabno, approximately 45 miles south of the village of Sagarejo. Herekle's Palace, Alexander Chavchavadze Museum near the town of Telavi. The Church of Mtavarangelozi in the acient village of Gremi. The Cathedral of Alaverdi near the village of Alaverdi and the Nekresi Monastery, a personel favorite, located near the village of Kvareli. There is a brand new and very modern winery called the Kindzmaraulis Marani Ltd., located near Kvareli, that has accomodations available in "bungalos" of sorts that are mostly unused at this time, due to the wine embargo and tourism problems brought on by the not very accurate perception of security with Russia. The brand new new $4 million dollar public school in the Village of Gavazi. Further south in the Alazani River Valley is the fortified town of Signakhi.
Telavi has accomodations but if you know even one Kakhetian, they will invite you into their homes and serve you authentic Georgian food and locally produced wine in mass quantities! If this is the case be prepared to partake in the Georgian tradition of the Supra! There is so much to see in the Kakheti region it can be done in a day but a week would be better! Ninosminda, Chavshavadze Museaum, Gremi, Alaverdi and Nekresi would be my top picks if you are on a day trip out of Tbilisi! Throw in either the Kindzmaraulis Marani Ltd. or Tsinandali wineries if you would like to sample the local wines. Both are located nearby.
Roger Rosen wrote a very good travel guide called, Georgia a Sovereign Country of the Caucaus. I have seen this book for sale online for a couple of bucks. International Travel Maps of Vancover, Canada makes a very good map of Georgia. Exchange rates are still favorable for USD's! The airports excellent in Tbilisi!
