Top 5 Must Do's in Northern France

Edit This

There is far more to France than just Paris. The country is packed full of beautiful towns and villages just screaming to be explored. Northern France unfortunately gets missed quite often. The weather is similar to that of the UK, sending tourists south for sun and ocean breezes. Here are the top 5 Northern France Must Do's to make up a good itinerary.

1.The Calais Booze Cruise
Although Calais is a pleasant town in its own right, this giant warehouse of cheap wine, cigarettes and cheese draws tourists off the road by the thousands. With EU regulation only requiring that 2 cents be paid for every bottle of wine taken into England, you can soon see why this place is like a magnet for British tourists. For the rest of the world, it's a great place to get some high quality French wine at a low cost.

2. The Calais Town Hall
The Calais Town Hall represents beauty to some, while to others it's an eyesore. Its unique design, however, makes it easy to find. The Town Hall holds several beautiful features in the many stained glass windows that decorate the first floor. They tell the story of Calais' liberation from England. Calais is proud of the fact that it was the last region in France to break free of British rule.

3. Normandy Beaches
For a sense of history take a tour of the Normandy D-Day beaches. Touring Omaha beach, you will see where one of the bloodiest battles of World War II took place. The mission nearly failed, and would have if it had not been for the bravery of the men in the 29th and 1st divisions. Near Omaha beach lies the American Military Cemetery, where 9,387 soldiers are laid to rest.

4. Mont St. Michel
This is one of the region's most beloved tourist attractions, bringing in more than 2 million visitors each year. The original abbey was created in 708 A.D. with buildings being added through the years. Today it is one of the most enchanting places to visit in France.

5. Montreuil
Montreuil is a town surrounded by 3 kilometers of ramparts. Tourists are free to walk along these while getting a view of the town. Walking along the ramparts also provides a great view of the surrounding landscape. Eventually you will arrive at the citadel, which can also be visited.
