Things to do in Northern France
Edit ThisAlthough the northern Region of France does not have quite as nice of a climate as the southern region, that should not deter anyone from visiting. What this area lacks in temperature it more than makes up for in scenic beauty and culture. There are plenty of northern France things to do to create a great travel itinerary.
The Statue of the 6 Citizens in Calais
During the Hundred Years War, France and England were fighting. The city of Calais was besieged by King Edward's forces to the point where nearly all the citizens were on the verge of starvation. In an attempt to save the lives of the people of the city the town governor went to King Edward to plead for their freedom and safety. He was offered all the wealth and riches in the town if the lives of the citizens could be spared. King Edward agreed but only if 6 of Calais most wealthy and prominent citizens would walk into the town square barefoot and tied together by ropes. Their fate also had to be left to the king. The 6 citizens agreed and offered their riches and lives to King Edward in exchange for those starving in Calais. King Edward's wife, Queen Phillipine was so moved by the bravery of the 6 citizens that she persuaded her husband to show them mercy and set them free. A moving statue and tribute to the 6 citizens stands in Calais and is one of the city's most visited attractions.
Cote d' Opal
The Cote'Opal is the French coastline area between Calias and the river Somme. By taking a drive or hike you will see the landscape change from white chalk cliffs of Calais to the white sand near the Somme region. There are still several German World War II bunkers along the beach for those who like a taste of history.
Dunkirk
The city of Dunkirk holds many points of interest for the visitor. World War II enthusiasts will know that it was the site of one of the largest rescue operations of the war. Dunkirk, however, has far more to offer than just the relatively recent history. The Duchess Anne ship is a site to see. It was offered to France as reparations for war damages. In 1980 the city of Dunkirk rescued and restored it to its former glory. Dunkirk has 2 castles to explore and is the perfect spot for wind and body surfing.
