Getting Around in Northern France

Edit This
Air Travel

There are numerous airports in northern France so that you can end up as close to your intended destination as possible. Some of the major ones include airports in Lyon, Rouen, Rennes, Angers and Nancy. The largest international airport in northern France is located in Lille. Two other airports, Charles de Gaulle and Orly, are located in Paris and have many more international flights. It may be possible to get a better rate at the excellent Charles de Gaulle Airport. Air France is the dominant airline that is used for international travel to and from waypoints around Europe. After arriving at the airport there are several options for getting around within the country.

Car Travel

The autoroute, or French highway system, is convenient. However, keep in mind that most towns and cities were not designed for cars and navigation can be tricky. Public transportation is probably the best option (and more affordable!) in small towns.

Hitchhiking

This is an acceptable and relatively safe practice in France, although there is always some risk involved. If you are feeling adventurous, you may try getting around by your thumb!

Train Travel

This is a convenient, affordable and safe way to get around most of northern France. You can take a regular or high-speed train, and with a variety of train companies operating throughout the country, you're guaranteed to find one that fits your needs.

Bus Travel

France discourages the use of buses for long-distance travel, in lieu of trains, but buses are very useful for navigating around inside of a city.

Metro Travel

Not all cities have a metro system, but if you find yourself in Paris, be ready to experience one of the world’s most extensive metro systems. You will find it simple to get around with whatever ticket or pass is most convenient for your schedule!
