Beaches in Northern France
Edit ThisThe allure of the fantastic beaches of northern France comes in part from their historical significance, and in part because of their incredible natural beauty. From Normandy to the northwest Brittany Coast, there are more than enough beaches to suit your needs in northern France. Many are perfect for families, with special activities for kids, safe, clean water, and fine white sand, while others, between rocky cliffs are excellent for surfing with large waves.
Normandy Beaches
Of course, Normandy, on the English Channel, is known for its famous D-Day beaches--Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno, and Sword--more than the relaxing beaches for sunbathing pictured when thinking of the French Riviera. However, besides those important, historic sites, Normandy has even more to offer. Le Rozel, Trouville, Pourville, and Vauville are perfect spots for the surfing crowd in Normandy, while at Saint-Valery-en-Caux in Seine-Maritime, you´ll find a beach named as the best beach for families. It has a leisure center with tons of activities to keep your kids interested and entertained all day long. The beach itself is gorgeous with dramatic cliffs and tiny pebbles stretching out into the water.
In Manche, check out Gouville Sur Mer. Its rolling sand dunes are excellent for sunbathing and playing with your kids, while the water is usually calm and perfect for swimming. The beach in Brehal offers lots of activities and attractions including sailing, pony rides, nearby golf, and fresh delicious seafood.
The Alabaster Coast is quite a sight to see in northern France, as well. The aptly named coast boasts huge, stunning cliffs with a startling alabaster-white color. The beaches in the area are great places to take photos and enjoy the view.
Brittany Beaches
In northwestern France, the Brittany Coast has a variety of landscapes and seascapes that shouldn´t be missed. It is a very popular area, second-most popular only to the famous Cote d´Azur--and much less hectic. From rocky outcrops, to tranquil coves, cliffs and wide, sandy beaches, the Brittany Coast has everything to offer. Of particular beauty is the Cote de Granit Rose, a rocky beach area made up of gorgeous pink granite. In some places the granite forms small pools filled with interesting creatures. Swimming and sailing are popular among tourists and locals alike, and the rolling, wildflower-covered hills behind the beach make for a colorful, relaxing background for the pink granite and turquoise water.
