Top 5 Must Do's in Pyrenees

Edit This

Tucked within the southern borders of France is Midi-Pyrénées (and the five Pyrenees must do's). This collection of provinces and mountain rises is unique among Europe. It is distinguished purely by its lack of distinction: with countless villages, cities and country-sides all tangled together. It’s a weave of history and ever-changing borders. But, within it, guests will find attractions that will delight all interests. Variety is more than a way of life in Midi. It is now the way of all vacations.

Grotte de Lombrives

Hidden in the realm of Ariège is the Grotte de Lombrives. This massive cave system will spark amazement. Often touted as the largest in all of Europe, it offers hours of exploration. Children and adults alike will thrill with the columns, minerals and formations. There is even an underground train to lead you through the caverns. Tours are available daily. Reservations are not required but those with health concerns should note the strenuous climbing involved. Plan well.

Basilica of St. Sernin

Found in Toulouse, this grand piece of architecture and spirituality will impress all who visit. Established in 1080, the Basilica is shaped to tower walls and organ calls. Its Roman design dominates the avenues, offering guests peerless views from the inside and out. It is a cathedral, crypt and tourist delight. It will please. There are no reservations needed for this attraction, but all are encouraged to devote their entire day to it. The tours are not short and will demand your time.

Micropolis

Experience nature like never before. With the Micropolis, you will travel to charming Aveyron and greet insects of all colors and varieties. Scorpions and spiders, crickets and centipedes--all can be viewed within this unique museum. Here nature is celebrated, explained through dynamic exhibits and in an accessible atmosphere. Families will appreciate this most of all. The Micopolos is open Monday through Saturday and welcomes groups (though larger parties are recommended to purchase tickets in advance).

Millau Viaduct

Incomparable scenery and ingenuity are waiting to be discovered. The Millau Viaduct is the tallest bridge in the world and spans over 8,000 feet. Visitors will marvel at its size, beauty and efficiency. It’s a design that is matched by few and surpassed by none. And, though only a recent attraction (it was constructed in 2004), it has quickly become one of the Pyrenees must-do's. You will see why.

Mont Perdu

Straddling the boundaries of France and Spain, Mont Perdu offers geological treats and natural wonder. Its diverse eco-systems (pastures, fields, forests and peaks) provide local wildlife and universal appeal. Its tallest point rises 3,352 meters into the air, granting views of both countries and all of Midi. Hiking enthusiasts will gain much from this, but those simply seeking landscapes will also be pleased. It’s an adventure for all.

Pyrenees must-do's are as varied as the towns that house them; and you will find much to enjoy as you explore them all.
