Amazing, that's the first word that springs to mind thinking about Les Baux de Provence. This it true for both the village itself and the landscape surrounding it.

The village itself is built on a rock plateau which is about a hundred metred wide and 500 metres tall. It's got steep cliffs on all sides making it an untakable stronghold in medieval times.

Next to the village was one a castele. Now there are only ruins left. They are definitely worth a visit because the castle area (entrance fee €7,50 for adults, €5,50 for students) spans about two thirds of the whole plateau. From the plateau the view of the surrounding countryside with it's patchwork of olive trees and vineyards is magnificent.

The other side of the village looks in the direction of "Les Alpilles", the strangely formed rock formations which can be found in the area between Les Baux the Provence and Saint Remy de Provence.
