Getting There in Avignon

Edit This

Avignon is in the south of France on the Rhone River. It is often considered the gateway to Provence and is a popular tourist destination.

Getting there by car: Avignon is located on a major north-south travel corridor from Paris. Two main auto routes, or tollways, the A6 to Lyon and the A7 from Lyon to Avignon comprise the primary roads. Travel time is just over 6 hours but can be considerably longer during the summer tourist season when thousands of Parisians as well as northern Europeans head south during July and August. It is best to avoid travel by car during the summer.

Gettting there by train: Avignon is less than three hours from central Paris on the TGV, or high speed train, and a little over three hours from Charles De Gaulle Airport. There are two stops, one in the city center at the city's original renovated train station, the second a little further out of the city at a new station with access to the higher speed rail line.

Getting there by plane: A small airport in Avignon, a few miles southeast of the city and not far from the A7 Autoroute, is served by three airlines, Air France, Flybe and Jet2. Most flights into Avignon come from Paris though a few originate in British cities and fly directly to Avignon. The international airport in Marseilles has inexpensive train connections to Avignon. The journey takes 60-90 minutes depending on the number of stops. There are car rental facilities at the airport as well.
