Located on the banks of the Garonne River , Toulouse is a city in the southwest of France . It was initially the capital of the previous province of Languedoc , which was eradicated in the French Revolution. Toulouse is currently the central city of the Midi-Pyrenees district, the biggest region in metropolitan France . Rich in history, yet lively and contemporary, Toulouse is one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Over the last 20 years, the city has become a center for spaceflight and aviation. In spite of the economic boom this has brought, Toulouse has remained hasn’t changed much over the years.

Architecture

Toulouse is also known as ‘Ville Rose’, which means the Pink City. It gets the name from the distinctive brick architecture that can be seen everywhere in the city. Toulouse plays host to a diverse and rich culture with its ancient looking buildings and monuments and capital square which is the hub of most activities. The city towards the Garonne River is actually on site of an early Roman settlement. Due to this, most of the red brick buildings and smaller streets here have a pseudo-Roman style.

Travelling in the City

Tourists in Toulouse can easily get to most of the sights on foot as it is a fairly small city. In fact, this is the best way to discover Toulouse . For those who prefer to get around in a less tedious way, Toulouse has a network of metro and bus lines that can take them to just about anywhere they want within the city. One can get specific maps, schedules and network maps for all the metro and bus lines in the city to make traveling easier.

One of the best things about this city is that it’s full of interesting sights to visit. The Capitole is one of the must-visit sights in the city with its pink façade, impressive architecture and several elegant columns. La Cathedrale Saint-Etienne that has a style spanning 5 decades is also an important sight to visit. Basilique Saint Sernin, Les Augustins and Georges Labit Museum are some of the other popular attractions in the city. Tourists can also explore the city with Toulouse Croisieres tourist boats that go along the Garonne River .

Toulouse , like all other French cities offers a cuisine that won’t disappoint tourists. Duck is a specialty in the region, so most restaurants serve this for dinner. Tourists should try Cassoulet, a famous regional dish in Toulouse that is made from different kinds of meat, pork skin and white beans. There are numerous restaurants, cafes, bistros and shops in the city as well.
