Budget Travel Ideas in Pezenas
Edit ThisThis Pezenas Budget Travel guide will help you save money while traveling to Pezenas.
Lodging
One of the best options when visiting Pezenas is to stay in a pension (boarding house). Several residents rent rooms in their house and often breakfast is included. Prices for these rooms start around 43 € per night for 2 people and there is a surcharge for additional people. These houses are located in or near the center of town and are within walking distance from attractions.
There are several campgrounds around the city as well. Camping Castelsec offers 25 spaces, prices start at 6.15 € per day and they offer basic amenities. Le Saint-Christol offers 98 spaces, 2 pools with a restaurant on site and its prices start at 10 € per day. Parc Loisirs Vacances Castelsec offers 12 bungalows, sleeping up to 5 people with prices starting at 67 € per night or 398 € per week. These are all in-season prices, off-season prices are slightly lower. Reservation are recommended.
Shopping
Every Saturday, you can go to the Marche du Samedi. Located in the center of town, this is an ancestral tradition as this market is held on the same site as the Medieval Fairs were. Here you can buy local and traditional French products, such as fresh oysters from Marseille, fresh goat cheeses from Roquefort, spices and aromatic plants from the Herault Valley as well as fresh pastries, ham and sausages, pates and sweets. You can also buy amazing local potteries for a steal.
Walking through town
Circular villages are typical to the Languedoc area as the houses were built around churches or castles. The narrow cobblestone streets with the rambling facade of houses and stores is a must see. Walking these streets is like a time warp and must be experienced. For approximately 5 €, you can take one of several guided tours of the protected area of town. These tours are held by the tourism office and are very informational.
Chateau de Pezenas
This is a Medieval castle built by the Duc de Montmorency in 1575. It boasts 7 towers, one of which was used as a chapel. In the 17th century, the Cardinal Richelieu ordered the residents to destroy the castle. Only ruins and the foundations remain today, but the site is breathtaking.
Montpezat
This estate began vine growing and wine making in the middle of the 19th century and the "chateau" was built in 1884. The vines are still cared for by the family, using a marriage of traditional methods and modern equipment. They still bottle their wine on site and you can tour the cellar and the "caveau", as well as purchase the wines made here, such as the Sauvignon, Merlot, Rose, Palombieres and Pharaonne. The Prestige and Enclos wines are aged in oak barrels, giving them this wonderful undertone.
