The Botanical Garden

Created in 1593 by Henry the IVth, to make it easier for medicine students to lead their researchs, the Plant Garden is France's oldest botanical garden. It includes tropical greenhouses, a 19th century orangery, a systematics school and a gorgeous English Garden, covering a 4,5 ha surface; Location : Boulevard Henri IV Tel : 04 67 63 43 22 Opening Hours : Daily from 10:00 to 19:00 from April 1st to September 30 and from 10:00 to 17:00 from October 1st to March 3. Closed : Mondays.

THE "DOMAINE DE RESTINCLIERES"

Location : Prades le Lez Open to the public all year round. A superb county estate located between Prades le Lez and Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers, it features play areas, discovery circuits, hiking trails and French formal gardens.

THE PEYROU ROYAL PROMENADE

In the outskirts of the "Ecusson" (a name derived from the historic centre's shield-like shape), the Peyrou promenade, outfitted for the equestrian statue of Henry the IVth to be erected, is one of the favorite places of Montpellier inhabitants. The Arch of Triumph and the Water Tower, in the continuation of which is located the Aqueduc, are all classical architecture models.

LES RIVES DU LEZ A ANTIGONE

On both sides of the River Lez, that links Montpellier to the sea and the floods of which are now perfectly mastered, extend the new districts of Montpellier : Antigone, Port Marianne and the University Pole. Adorned with little tree-lined pedestrian bridges, the river banks, with their old dance-halls encourage adults and children to take a stroll or to learn how to drive easy and secure electrical boats.

THE "DOMAINE DE GRAMMONT"

Location : Avenue Albert Einstein Open to the public all year round. Near the Eastern entrance to Montpellier, this 90-ha estate houses various activities : The drama center of the "Treize Vents" theater, the Rock-music Hall, a sports and leisure activity complex, the school's outdoor centre... The former monastery of Grammont in the 12th century, its beautiful park and carefully maintained green areas (You will find a several century-old cedar-tree and numerous tree species) make it an enticing place to visit.

THE "DOMAINE DE MERIC"

Location : rue de Ferran – Location :bus n° 10, Stop avenue de la Justice in Castelnau Opening Hours : in the summer, from 8:00 to 20:00 and in winter from 8:00 to 17:30. A wonderful estate that used to belong to painter Frédéric Bazille's family, the "Domaine de Meric" features an orangery and an English Garden surrounded by green areas planted with Mediterranean tree species.

LUNARET ZOOLOGICAL PARK

Location : 50, avenue d’Agropolis Tel : 04 67 63 27 63 Free Entrance Opening Hours : Daily from 9:00 to 17:00. From September 16 to May 14,closed on Monday mornings. To the North of Montpellier, in a thick Mediterranean "garrigue" shadowed by big pine-trees, the park is home to 145 species - 750 animals in total- scattered on a 80-ha "Réserve refuge libre" protected area.

TERRAL CASTLE

Location : Terral district in Saint-Jean de Védas Opening Hours : Saturdays and Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00. Upon request during the week. Its 19th century garden is planted with numerous tree species : Lambat cypresses, European hackberry elms, scholar-trees, and Chusan palms. It also has a pleasant "Scent Garden" and gathers over 1,000 plant species on a 4 ha surface.
