Shopping in Montpellier
Edit ThisMontpellier has many different boutiques that are fun to browse and there are also large shopping centers and chain stores that will make shopping a pleasurable experience.
Boutiques
The boutiques that line the cobblestone streets of Montpellier sell designer clothing, jewelry, shoes, housewares and much more. They are fun places to shop. To find the boutiques you should go to Place de la Comedie and then find Rue de la Loge to the left of McDonalds. Rue Massene is in front of McDonalds and is another street full of the boutiques. Most of these little shops are open every day but Sunday. Some open at 9:00 a.m. and others later. Since the shops are independently owned, owners can open whenever they wish. Most close for extended lunch and reopen in the afternoon around 1:30 or 2:00 and stay open until 9:00 or 10:00 at night.
Polygone Shopping Center
If you get tired of treading up and down the streets only to find expensive shops, go back to Place de la Comidie and find the Polygone shopping center. This center has parking right in front and 3 floors of 120 shops. Most of the stores in the Polygone open around 9 or 10 in the morning and stay open all day instead of closing for lunch. The shops in the Polygone are department stores and French chain stores with a few independently owned shops.
Flea Market
There is a flea market held every Sunday morning in the downtown area and a farmer’s market is in operation every Sunday in the Antigone District of town. There are several indoor markets on Rue de la Loge that sell food and drink as well. Les Halles Castellane is one of the best markets in town and has stalls where bread, cheese, fruit and vegetables are sold. There is a bar here for coffee or wine as well.
Aux Grands Vins de France
If you enjoy wine you may want to visit Aux Grands Vins de France on Rue de l’Argenterie on Saturdays. This store has a wine selection from all around France but specializes in wines from southern France, specifically the Languedoc region. Wine tastings are held Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Hypermarkets
In the outlying areas of Montpellier there are many hypermarkets where you can pick up items plus food and drink for inexpensive prices.
Whether you just want to browse in expensive and unusual shops or visit a unique flea market or food market, you can find what you want in Montpellier.
