The Centre Ville, or center of town in Montpellier, is a great place to look for high quality and low cost food. The French take great pride in their food so it is possible to find an amazing assortment of great tasting dishes in even budget restaurants. Le Bouchon St. Roch in the center of town is a restaurant worthy of the highest praise. Their menu is packed full of local dishes that will leave your taste buds singing. Their 3-fish special is an apparent local favorite. Outdoor seating is available and the prices are very reasonable. 10 to 15 euros will buy a lunch that you will not believe.

Transportation

Bus travel is one of the cheapest option for travel within Montpellier. The city has an excellent system and is very reasonably priced. France rail and Eurail passes are also available to tourists who live outside the country. They offer free train travel around France or Europe for varying durations of time. Driving in France can get expensive. There is the cost of car maintenance and the fact that the main highways are all toll roads. Hitchhiking is still practiced in France with toll stations being one of the best places to catch rides. Although hitchhiking is considered safe in France use extreme caution when hitchhiking. There is good, budget accommodation available in Montpelier. For those who don't desire luxury travel it is possible to find rooms for less than 30 euros per night. The Hotel Prime is an example. It is located close to the center of town and rooms start at 24 euros per night. The hotel is basic but clean and comfortable. There are also several hostel options available in Montpellier with rooms starting as low as 20 euros per night.

Free Activities

Montpellier has several sites to see and things to do that don't cost anything. The Citadel historic site is open to tourists and costs nothing to see. Bois de Montmaur is a nature path that also functions as the town's jogging trail. Access is open and free. St. Pierre's Cathedral as well as the Park Mangol are nice places to see that cost visitors nothing.
