Sarlat (or Sarlat-La-Caneda) is the capitol of Périgieux Noir and a lovely village where medieval times revive. The Cathedrale St Sacerdos, the various churches and the sandstone buildings, all of them have been restored in their near authentic state. The several Chateaux are a must for mystic lovers (as long as you’re not afraid of bunping into one of the many ghosts that haunt the place). Sarlat is an excellent village from which to explore the Dordogne valley.

It is a cultural centre and, like Périgueux, offers its visitors many festivals and concerts during the Summer months. Sarlat, a jewel of its kind, offers such a treasure of medieval and renaissance architecture that it is often used in the making of films. Not to be missed is the house of Etienne de La Boétie, a great philosopher and friend of Michel de Montaigne.
