Getting Around in Marseille
Edit ThisThere are several ways to travel in Marseille, France. Travel by car is an option, but since traffic is frequently heavy and parking can be difficult if not impossible to find, there are several other options for getting around.
Metro
While there are only two lines on the Metro (the red line and the blue line), the Metro in Marseille is quick and cost-effective, especially if you buy a multi-day pass which can be used on both the Metro and bus lines. The red and blue lines meet at two stations, Gare St. Charles (the main station) and Castellane.
Bus
There are many bus lines in Marseille. You can travel to nearly anywhere in the city using the bus, but it's slower than the Metro due to having to deal with traffic. Day passes for the bus are available. You can purchase a day pass for a bus tour around Marseille. The tour takes about 90 minutes and leaves from Vieux Port every hour.
Ferry Boat
You can cross the Vieux Port via "César," a ferry boat. The ride takes 3 or 4 minutes. Ferry services run until 7 p.m. Ferry travel is quite popular in Marseille, with ferries to Algiers, Tunis, Corsica, Sardinia, Crete and many other destinations.
Airplane
The Marseille/Provence Airport is located between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence. There is a shuttle bus service to both Marseille and to Aix-en-Provence, which leaves every 20 minutes and takes a direct route from the airport to the Marseille central train and bus station. It takes around 30 minutes to get from the airport to Marseille, depending on traffic.
