Festivals in Marseille

A visit to the Cote d'Azur might coincide with one of the many Marseille festivals. Carnaval is perhaps the most well-known Marseille festival, but there are several others to enjoy with people of all ages. There are opportunities year-round for visitors of any age to participate in Marseille festivals.

Winter Festivals

The Candelamas Day Procession takes place in early February. Although it is a religious event, it has been an important celebration since the 13th century. The remains of the "Black Virgin" are taken out of the century crypt of Saint-Victor Abbey and are paraded down the nearby streets.

The Japan Expo and Russian Festival are held in February and March, respectively, and celebrate the cultures of both regions. The Japan Expo is held at the Parc Channot, where exhibits include the martial arts, cinema and video games. The Russian Festival is held at the Toursky Theater on the edge of Marseille. The festival honors Russian film and cabaret performances.

Spring Festivals

The spring brings the famous Carnaval, held in mid-March, with colorful street parades and performers in the city's Old Port. March also holds the Farmers and Wine Growers Spring Fair, a counterpart to a similar event held in the fall.

An important port and maritime city, Marseille is known for its sailing festivals or regattas. International Maritime Nautical Week is held in April and attracts sailing teams and fans from around the world. Several other regattas are held by the Societe Nautique de Marseille during the year.

Summer Festivals

The Festival of Marseille is held in June and July and showcases local music, dance and film. The Blues Festival, held in June, features local blues musicians. The Five Continents Jazz Festival, which features musicians from around the world, is held in July. The Documentary International Film Festival, also held in July, showcases the year's best documentaries.

The city's Bastille Day celebration, July 13 and 14, features parades, fireworks and a ball. The fireworks have become an attraction in recent years due to their size. The festivities are held in the Quai du Port.

Fall Festivals

September brings the Festival of the Wind, or kite festival, a colorful competition among European kite flyers at Prado Beach. Teams represent Spain, Switzerland, and Italy, in addition to France. The September Sea Festival pays homage to the city's maritime history with several special exhibits and events held in the Old Port.

The months of October and November feature a tasting week and the Farmers and Wine Growers Fall Fair.
