Day Trips in Marseille
Edit ThisMarseille day trips can be both exciting and relaxing, depending on which direction you head. Here's a look at some of the towns that can easily be visited from Marseille and the attractions they have to offer.
Aubagne - Distance: 19.9 km
If you want to begin your Marseille day trips with places that are close by, there's no better place to start than Aubagne. Located just 20 minutes from Marseille, Aubagne is not the major tourist destination that characterizes other cities in Provence. Its claim to fame is its distinction as the birthplace of French author Marcel Pagnol. You can visit his home and the gallery that houses figurines based on his characters. The clock tower that was built circa 1900 is also of interest, as is the church of Saint Sauveur. Even better are the nature walks that can be had through the Garlaban and the Chaine de la Sainte Baume (location of the Holy Cave where Mary Magdalene was said to have lived out her last years).
Aix-en Provence - Distance: 31.8 km
The city of art and fountains is a great place to visit and is conveniently just 23 minutes from Marseille. See the thermal springs that were popular in Roman times and then take a walking tour to see all of the fountains. The best include the Fountain of the Four Dolphins, King Rene Fountain, and a hot water fountain that dates back to Roman times. Visit the Cathedral of the Holy Saviour and marvel at its tapestries and eclectic style that includes Roman columns and a Renaissance style dome. Don't forget to stop in at Deux Garcons to have a drink in one of Ernest Hemingway's favourite haunts.
Martigues - Distance: 43.2 km
Just 30 minutes from Marseille, a day trip that will appeal to your need for nature. Visit Martigues, the Venice of Provence, and cross the blue drawbridge to the island to see the bright buildings seemingly floating along the canal. The other sections of town are just as beautiful, with plenty of public gardens and parks. There are museums for everything from paintings to archaeology, and the churches are all incredible structures that are worth a visit. A big attraction is the local winery, La Venise Provencale.
Toulon - Distance: 63.5 km
Toulon is another city famous for its fountains, the most famous of which is the Fountain of the Dolphin. The city is just a 40 minute drive from Marseille, and is well worth the trip. Toulon Cathedral, after all, is a national monument of France. You can also visit the Toulon Opera or the Gardens of Alexander I. The Provencal market takes place each morning, and you can cap your trip off with a cable car ride to the top of Mount Faron.
