March Music

Les Dèferlantes d’Argeles sur Mer is a music festival that takes place in the spring. It has been running since 2006 and has increasingly gained popularity. An eclectic mix of singers and inter-generational bands star in this open air concert. Suzanne Vega, Coeur de Pirate, Patti Smith, Gossip and Iggy and the Stooges are but a few examples of participants. Tickets can be purchased online.  

May Movies

If you’re a movie buff, go to Argeles sur Mer in May. For over 20 years the village has held this film festival. It’s called Les Rencotres Cinemaiginaire. Every year they chose a theme and movies that fit it accordingly. You can catch everything from shorts to feature films. Movies are sometimes shown here before their official release. It’s one of the best film festivals in the region.

Summer Markets

Flea markets, crafts and organic products take center stage in the summertime. There is a fun evening market that is held at the village dock from June to August. There you can find antiques, accessories and furniture. For handmade goods and crafts go to Centre Plage at night. Artisans are there until midnight.  This market is open from June to September. During these summer months you can also buy organic products at Place de Nouveau Monde.

Fall Festivals

To experience the Catalan countryside, plan to go to Argeles sur Mer in September. L’Alpec de Valmy is held at this time. Alpec, in Catalan, means gathering. As you can guess, this festival features Catalan dances and music. Sardana dancers give a show and bystanders can join in. Another big festival is that of Saint Come and Saint Damien Festival, the town’s official patron saints. They are honored with dances, parades, food and shows.

Chess Champs and High Art

During the month of October, the village runs a table game championship. There are bridge and chess competitions. However, it’s Argeles sur Mer’s international art exhibit that’s truly worth a trip. It is held at the end of September and early October. Established and up-and-coming artists show their work. The art show is well respected and well attended.
