1. Visit Perpeytuse
Just outside of Argeles sur Mer is what is left of the Cathar
temple, Perpeytuse. This is found at the top of a nearby mountain and
you will have to walk part of the way up. The castle is amazing and you
can see as far away as Spain and Andorra. This castle is considered one
of the last Cathartic strongholds. There is a great medieval festival
held here each year.
2. Swim at the Beach
The beach is excellent and you should plan to spend some time
sunbathing and swimming. The best time to visit is in the spring and
autumn, as the beach is less crowded. All of the activities are much
more accessible. Many of the beaches have received European awards for their very quality, which is extremely
important to the population. All the facilities are sanitary and the
beach is cleaned every day. Everything is completely optimized for
safety.
3. Walk the Coastal Path
The coastline is beautiful and has a lovely path that can be
followed from Marende to Port-Argeles. If you start at the Mas Larrieu
National Nature Reserve, you will cross the Riberette Ford and follow
through the Maritime Public Domain. This domain has many rocky coves
and steps in the rocks, making it easy to reach the beach. You will see
the wet area known as Le Racou. The last section to the path is from Le
Racou to the l’Ouille beach through a forest area. You can take guided
tours of the coastal path.
4. View Mountains from Park of Valemy
The Park of Valemy has some of the most beautiful views of the
mountains, beach and town. There are many panoramic viewpoints. You
cannot access the Castle, but the park is owned by the town. The park
contains fountains, a nature trail, waterfalls and a play
area for children. Each year the park hosts the International Art Exhibition, Flower
Days, Festival les Deferlantes, Flamenco Festival and the gathering of
sardanas.
5. Main Parish Church
Notre Dame dels Prats is a church from the 14th century. The bell tower can be seen from miles around and was constructed in the Gothic style. Inside are more than 100 works that depict 30 different saints. Much restoration work has been done with most of it completed in 2008.
