According to a map, the Basque region is in the South of France, but it is not at all like the "South of France". Basque country is not as picturesque as Nice and Cannes, the two cities most commonly associated with the South of France, and its flat coast line lies against a mountainous backdrop.Here is a list of the Top 5 Must Do's:
1. Izadia Ecology Park
This park is located on the Basque Coast, nestled between the River Adour and the Atlantic Ocean. For a mere €4 you are welcome to walk through the preserves of the remaining habitats of the coast's dune. Izadia conserves a number of important animal and plant species, and is located in a very scenic spot. The preserve is home to a very informative visitor center detailing the conservation work. There are interactive audio guides for rental, or you can arrange in advance a guided tour. The Ecology Park is only opened on various dates throughout the summer season, make sure to check opening days and hours before your trip.
2. Biarritz
A seaside city on the Bay of Biscay, Biarritz is located in southwestern France. This luxurious seaside town is a top destination for tourists and surfers alike. The annual Biarritz Surf Festival is one of the premier surf events in Europe, and a fun activity for any visitor. There are many things to do in Biarritz such as visiting one of the many beautiful beaches, or one of the two large Casinos, the Barriere and Bellevue on the waterfront by the Grande Plage. The town has a very strong surf following, and there is an excellent golf course nearby. Make sure not to miss the Le Phare (lighthouse) built in 1888.

5. Petit train de la Rhune
Petit Train de la Rhune is one of the most picturesque train rides in Europe. Since 1924, the Petit Train has been trekking locals and visitors to the summit of La Rhune Mountain, a height of almost 3000 feet. The 30 minute ride to the summit and through the gorgeous Basque region is done on a train consisting of two coaches that run every 35 minutes. The line operates from middle March through early November.
