Situated in the Sologne, near the city of Blois, Cheverny is one of the main chateaux of the Loire valley, the lands of which have been owned by the same family for nearly seven centuries. Of the original stronghold, a few traces remain in the present outbuildings.

Cheverny is privately owned (and lived in by the descendants of the Hurault, marquis de Vibraye) and is also a famous center of venery proudly displaying its many hunting trophies. The present chateau, which was completed in 1634 by Henri Hurault, Count of Cheverny (son of Phillippe Hurault, Chancellor of Kings Henri III and Henri IV) was built in Bourre stone, a local stone which becomes whiter and harder with age. The architect Boyer de Blois and the painter, Jean Mosnier directed the building and the decoration, as they did for Blois and Chambord chateaux.
