The Grand Theatre

The Grand Theatre was inaugurated on April 7th 1780 and marked an important stage of the town’s urbanism. To construct this impressive building (88 metres by 47), he called upon the architect Victor Louis (1731-1800) Grand Prix de Rome, famous for his work on the Chartres Cathedral, the Palais Royal and the Théâtre Français in Paris. The Grand Theatre of Bordeaux was conceived as a temple of the Arts and Light. The statue of the pilgrim Saint James, a shell decorating his purse, standing among the apostles in the opening of the Royal Door (North side). Recently restored funeral murals from the XIVth and XVth centuries depicting Saint James (Sainte-Anne chapel).

Chapelle de l'hôpital Saint-Jacques (Chapel of Saint James’s Hospital)

(rue du Mirail) Founded in the XIIth century, it fell into ruin during the XVIIIth century. Remains of the chapel can be seen from rue Saint-François.

The North door is crowned with shells. The retable and altar in the Saint-Jacques Chapel (XVIIth century) with Jacqaire ornaments. The Cardinal François de Sourdis had work carried out in the chapel in honour of Saint James at the beginning of the XVIIth century –XVIIth century retable – a central painting of "The Apotheosis of Saint James" (1631) – stained glass window by Couturat, a contemporary work depicting Saint James’s life combating the infidels – on the right side, a pilgrim’s tombstone.

It is in Bordeaux, the original pilgrim site, where Charlemagne is said to have lain down Roland’s ivory horn after the defeat of Ronceveaux. The Pilgrims’ guide to Santiago de Compostela also advised pilgrims to visit the body of Saint-Seurin. The statue of Saint James holding a staff in his right hand – South Door – (XIIIth century).

In 1771 Ferdinand-Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan became Archbishop and undertook the reconstruction of the old quarters which dated from the Middle Ages, the new palace was completed in 1784. Despite numerous modifications, the interior of the palace has conserved the great stairway of honour, a suite of drawing rooms on the ground floor with sculpted woodworks and a dining room decorated with trompe-l’œils.
