When to Go in Grenoble

Edit This
This Grenoble When to Go guide will help you decide which period is better suited to your needs.

Weather

Grenoble experiences 4 distinct seasons. Located in the French Alps, the mountains protect the city from the bitter northern winds.

Winter

The coldest months are January and February. Snow blankets the city and its surrounding and the temperature drops below freezing at night. In the daytime, the temperature can reach 40 degrees F. The hills keep their snow quite late in spring, so skiers can enjoy the slopes until late April. Winter activities are plentful in this area. You can find numerous ski resorts where you can ski, snowboard or tube down the mountain side. You can also find several skating rinks and tobogganing hills in and around town.

Spring

Spring temperatures reach 60 degrees F in daytime and nature awakes from its slumber. Spring is a season or renewal, and you can witness it first hand here in the Alps. Take a hike in Les Ecrins National Park and observe over 2000 plant species and several kinds of rare birds.

Summer

Summer temperatures reach a balmy 80 degrees F. It is the perfect season for leisurely strolls in the mountains and walks along meandering streets. This weather is perfect for water sports. For the more adventurous, paragliding and canyoning is very popular here, but they are not for the faint of heart.

Fall

The end of August and early September bring downpours as Fall sets in. Temperatures cool again, reaching 55 degrees F in late September. The foliage is breathtaking at this time of the year. Bring your camera and visit one of several forts and castles around the city. With the golden and red foliage as a backdrop, your pictures will be amazing.
