Getting There
Edit ThisThe Saimaa Canal, which starts at Lappeenranta, plays a central role for water-borne transport in Eastern Finland. The Finnish parts of the 43-km long canal are entirely within Lappeenranta city territory. The canal links the Saimaa waterway system to the Baltic Sea at the Gulf of Finland. Finland´s most important inland waterway harbour, the Lappeenranta Mustola port, is located on the Saimaa.
As a border town with good traffic connections Lappeenranta offers special benefits in foreign trade, particularly in Eastern trade. Lappeenranta is regarded as a Gateway to Russia for transportation of goods and tourism in Finland. Road traffic runs via Lappeenranta-Nuijamaa Border Station and rail traffic via Lappeenranta- Vainikkala Border Station.
