Kajaani, situated on the shore of Lake Oulujärvi, is a pleasant town that still radiates the rural character of the area. Main sights are the the old wooden houses in the town's centre, the Kajaani Art Museum and the ruins of the Kajaani castle. In the wintertime, there are good skiing opportunities in the surrounding area and the town features a popular jazz festival every spring. Elias Lönnrot, the collector of all the folk poetry that eventually became the Finnish national epic, used to reside in Kajaani.
