Åland flag between Finnish and Swedish flags
The Aland Islands group, comprising over 6000 islands, is located in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland. The main language is Swedish, dating back from the 13th century when the islands still belonged to the King of Sweden. At the beginning of the 19th century, Aland was claimed by Russia and it was not until 1921 that it was restored to its Scandanavian 'owner' again, it this instant, Finland.
Although the islands have a certain form of autonomy, they still form a province of Finland nowadays, not in the least because Finland' guaranteed the preservation of the Swedish language, culture and self-government.
